Also referred to as: CKD, acute kidney disease, chronic renal failure, end stage renal disease, ESRD
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) arises when the kidneys lose their ability to effectively filter toxins and waste products from the bloodstream and carry out their functions at full capacity. This decline in kidney function can occur suddenly or develop gradually over time.
The symptoms of chronic kidney disease may encompass alterations in urination patterns, swelling of the feet, ankles, hands, or face, sensations of fatigue or weakness, episodes of shortness of breath, the presence of ammonia-like breath or a metallic taste in the mouth, discomfort in the back or flank region, itching, decreased appetite, and occurrences of nausea and vomiting. Diabetic individuals may also experience an increased frequency of hypoglycemic episodes.
